THEY'RE TOO COMPLICATED TO USE." "Y STUDENTS DON'T CARE FOR THEM." "I'M NOT SURE WHERE TO GET THEM." "I'M NOT FAMILIAR ENOUGH WITH THEM." IN THE FALL OF 2002, I CONDUCTED BRIEF SURVEYS OF THE TEACHERS AND TEACHER-LIBRARIANS IN MY GRADUATE CATALOGING CLASS AND IN A COLLEAGUE'S MEDIA SELECTION CLASS TO LEARN WHETHER AND HOW GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS ARE USED IN THE SCHOOLS WHERE THESE STUDENTS WERE EMPLOYED. THE SCHOOLS INCLUDED IN THE SURVEYS WERE IN SEVERAL CENTRAL MINNESOTA COMMUNITIES AND ALSO DISTRICTS IN THE MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL SUBURBS. SOME OF THE COMMENTS GIVEN APPEAR ABOVE, AND "I'M NOT FAMILIAR ENOUGH WITH THEM" WAS THE MAJOR HURDLE CITED. However, a few weeks after I shared a number of government web sites with the students in the selection class, I received comments such as
